Best Practices in Case
You’re Confronted with the Unexpected

From choosing a carrier, building a policy, to filing a claim, if you’re new to insurance, these decisions can feel intimidating. We get it… the world of insurance is full of intricate details. That’s why we are intentional about risk-management education.

We’re in the business of preparation and risk mitigation. Let’s explore best practices in case you’re confronted with an unexpected incident and considering an insurance claim.

What is an Insurance Claim?

A claim is a way to formally notify your insurance carrier that you have suffered a loss. This is your official request for payment based on the terms of your insurance policy.

The Value of Prep Work

They say measure twice, cut once. Before you even need insurance make sure you’re setting yourself up for a smooth process. Insurance carriers are “fine print pros” because they wrote it. Whether you’re working with a commercial, personal, or investment property policy (just to name a few), it’s possible to be underinsured or have coverage gaps. All these scenarios can lead to claim challenges. Find an insurance advisor who is willing to page through the fine print and confirm proper coverage.

Who Handles Claims?

Insurance claims are often handled by the insurance carrier. It is a separate department that requires significant industry expertise. As an independent insurance agency, we are not permitted to handle claims. However, we can make sure you have an appropriate policy, which in turn provides better coverage.

Anytime an incident occurs, you will need to decide if you’re going to file a claim. Some situations are greyer than others. When building an insurance policy, your premium rate will often reflect how many past claims you’ve made. At the end of the day, you need to be comfortable with your decision!

What to do When Incidents Happens:

When an incident occurs, it can feel overwhelming. Knowing what to do in advance will give you greater peace of mind in the moment.

If Necessary, Seek Emergency Help

Call police or an ambulance to help you navigate the situation on scene. This can also help you down the road when you need documentation. Always make sure you hold on to the police report, medical receipts, and articles not only for your well-being, but also if you choose to file a claim.

Secure Documentation

While on scene, it’s important you remember to document. Take pictures of damage, surroundings, or anything that could be helpful in explaining the incident. Likewise, it can be wise to document your possessions in your policy before an incident even happens. While the situation is still fresh in your mind, this a great time to write down a detailed recap of conversations and list of damages, or losses.

If you need help remembering documentation details in the moment, call your insurance carrier. You can find their number on the back of your insurance card, or in today’s world, their mobile app.

Your Insurance Carrier is Your Best Resource

The claims department is dedicated to handling losses, accidents, and emergency situations daily. Call your insurance carrier directly and they will be able to guide your next steps, help you understand your timeline, and even confirm coverage for things like rental cars or hotels. Once in contact with the carrier, they will take you through the process of filing, confirming documentation, and payment(s)

As an independent agency, we have access to credible national insurance carriers to compare your best coverage options. Review your policy today with an expert to ensure all your risks are accounted for.
